The Laurence Olivier Awards The Laurence Olivier Awards are presented by the Society of London Theatre in recognition of distinguished artistic achievement in London theatre. They were established in 1976 as The Society of West End Theatre Awards and Lord Olivier agreed to have his name associated with them in 1984. They are now regarded as the most prestigious awards in London theatre and the highlight of the theatrical year. The Awards are unique because the adjudicating panels include members of the theatre-going public who work alongside experts chosen by the Society for their knowledge and professional experience. There are three independent panels for Theatre, Opera and Dance. Any new production that opens in a theatre represented in membership of the Society is eligible for consideration, provided it is proposed and seconded by members of the Society. The nominations are announced in January each year and the Awards are presented in February at a ceremony televised by BBC Television. The Bronze Laurence Olivier Award was commissioned by the Society from the sculptor Harry Franchetti and represents the young Olivier as Henry V at the Old Vic in 1937.
